#01 1920-Rexall Ninety-Three Hair Tonic Antique Bottle w/ Metal Cover & Embellishment
Interesting history on this bottle. The following verbatim description was taken from Smithsonian website. "....was produced by the United Drug Company of Boston, Mass. The name, "Rexall" is derived from "Rx", the common abbreviation for prescription. In company promotional material, Rexall also meant "King of All". By 1909 the United Drug Company of Boston, Mass. was producing about 300 different Rexall Remedies, which were sold through the company's franchised Rexall Stores. Rexall "Ninety-Three" Hair Tonic was marketed with a money-back guarantee under the slogan "Try It On Us!" Early advertising claimed to relieve scalp irritation, eradicate dandruff, and prevent baldness. Other advertisements claimed the hair tonic was the choice of fastidious or particular people. This bottle probably dates to around 1920. Rexall "Ninety-three" Hair Tonic was sold into the 1930s. Intended for such cases of Dandruff, Falling Hair, Scanty Hair Growth, Scalp Irritation, Temporary Loss of Hair and Color, and such other affections of the scalp, as are benefitted by a tonic treatment.". Interestingly, on the partial label it states "Contains of 24% Alcohol". (My take and only in jest, so if you drank enough of it-you could see actual improvement of said hair defect...LOL) Was produced ca 1920 by United Drug Company, Boston Massachusetts or Saint Louis, Missouri. Bottle measures approx 7.25"H, 2 1/4"W, 1.5"D, 8.1 Oz. Rexall is actually engraved on the metal portion of the cover-w/ filigree design. Partial label. No chips, cracks or bruises. Random bubbles throughout glass bottle. Embossed U. D. CO on bottom of the bottle. Interesting piece w/ an interesting history!!
