1. antique repoussé brass cachepot or jardinière, likely of French or Dutch origin from the 19th or early 20th century
Gorgeous English Brass Repousse' Cherubs Planter/Jardiniere Repoussé is a metalworking technique where a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been a popular material for decorative arts for centuries due to its durability and golden appearance. Planters and cachepots like this were particularly fashionable during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting a broader interest in horticulture and interior decoration. The cherubic figures suggest a Neoclassical influence, a style that experienced revivals throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. These pieces were often used to display houseplants, adding a touch of elegance to Victorian and Edwardian homes. There is normal wear for its age with patina in areas. It features intricate embossed scenes depicting cherubs or putti. Items like this were traditionally used to hold potted plants for decoration. Brass planters often develop a unique patina over time, which increases their value as antiques. Similar ornate containers are also used as champagne buckets or decorative storage vessels.
