Vintage 1930s Continental Electric Art Deco Wood Mantle Clock - Converted to Battery - Working

Nice little Art Deco shelf clock for a mantle, desk, or bookshelf.

Original maker is Continental Electric, Continental Mfg. Co. New York, N.Y. - Made in U.S.A. as marked on the dial. This is the classic arched-top tambour style with two-tone wood inlay on the front below the dial and brass bezel.

The Conversion:

This clock was originally an electric plug-in clock. It has been converted to a modern battery-operated quartz movement, as you can see in the back photo. A AA quartz movement is now installed. The back wood cover has been cut open to fit the movement and there is a small hole at the bottom rear where the original electric cord came out - see photos 5 & 6. This was a common conversion to keep these clocks usable.

I have tested it with a battery and it DOES WORK and keeps time.

Condition:

Good vintage condition for age. Wood case shows light wear, surface scratches and finish wear on the base and top edge consistent with 90+ years of use - see close-up photos. Brass bezel has some tarnish / patina. Dial is clean with good graphics, some light dust under glass. Glass is intact, no cracks.

The case is solid - no major breaks. The modifications to the back are as pictured - the back is open / cut as part of the battery conversion.

This is a great little working clock with wonderful Art Deco character - perfect for everyday use without needing to be near an outlet.
