Dartington Crystal Baby Hedgehog Paperweight Capredoni Engraved w/ Original Box
This is a high quality molded and engraved lead crystal paperweight, designed by Alfred Capredoni for Dartington Crystal.
Alfred Capredoni was one of very few artists to have succeeded in mastering the centuries-old art of crystal intaglio engraving, which dates back to around the 14th Century, when it was practiced in Alfred's native Italy. He used the same techniques developed by the Venetians, the only difference being that he used power-driven tools.
Capredoni produced a number of designs for Dartington Crystal. Most seem to have been inspired by his obvious love of wildlife. Until his death in 2004 he supported many conservation organizations in their work to preserve endangered species worldwide.
Every sculpture designed by Alfred Capredoni bears the Dragonfly logo, symbolising nature, beauty and grace and certifying its authenticity. A small dragonfly is hidden in each crystal engraving as a permanent logo.
This particular paperweight, or ‘Crystal Sculpture’ as they are often known, depicts a baby hedgehog with a butterfly, with realistic detail. The dragonfly logo is at the base on the left hand side(see photo 9). The base is polished flat and signature engraved.
