FROM UNCLE VINNY was my mother’s creation. Since I was a child, she would give extra presents to family on holidays, things that she found at thrift stores and garage sales. These gifts were handpicked for the recipient, and we always enjoyed opening them. She would sign the tag from “Uncle Vinny”, after St. Vincent de Paul’s endearing nickname, St. Vinny’s. Uncle Vinny performed his gift-giving duties under my mother’s tutelage for 50 years. Some relatives have known his presence all their lives: one cousin grew up without ever learning the truth behind our second Santa Claus, and she reached adulthood believing that we had some strange, distant uncle who sent us used presents! Today, my family still occasionally takes up Uncle Vinny’s mantle, bestowing thrifted gifts to each other in his name. I carry on the tradition in my own way, reselling vintage treasures I find at the same places mom and I used to shop together. Uncle Vinny lives on. I hope Uncle Vinny has the perfect gift here for you!

Our History Swazi Candles was started in an old cowshed of a former dairy in 1982 by two South African art graduates. In those days, the Kingdom of Swaziland was a haven of peace amidst troubled countries and proved to be an excellent place for setting up a cottage craft industry. The mountainous countryside was beautiful, and the Swazi people were warm and friendly, proving to be ideal partners for our industry. The little workshop soon gained a reputation for producing unique candles and started to attract visitors. The vibrancy of the workshop, uniqueness of the product, and the skill of our artisans resulted in Swazi Candles becoming one of Swaziland's premier tourist attractions. By the mid-nineties, the humble cowshed workshop had burgeoned into an industry that employed over 200 local people and exported candles all over the world. The Art of Millefiori The beautifully intricate designs of Swazi Candles use the ancient technique known as "millefiori" or "thousand flowers". It was first found in Alexandria and then perfected in the great Italian glass making centers of Murano and Venice. On the Africa coast, these Venetian trade beads were used as a form of currency to barter for gold and ivory. They were so popular that the North and West Africans soon made their own variation. Thus was born the African trade bead, rare and sought after by collectors to this day. The art of millefiori continues in Swazi Candles, but instead of glass, we use a special hard wax to create the colorful designs. The veneer of the outer shell hardly melts when the candle is lit, resulting in a rich, romantic glow from the candle burning within. The shells can still be used even after the inside wax is gone when refitted with a votive or tea candle.
