Vintage Masayoshi Yamagishi Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi Doll Hand Painted A1203

Vintage Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi by noted Gumma artist Masayoshi Yamagishi (山岸政好). This beautifully carved wooden figure has a serene closed-eye expression framed by an oversized natural-wood coiffure. Her warm russet kimono is hand decorated with stylized golden flowers, green leaves and fine incised details. The base is signed 政好作, “made by Masayoshi,” together with the artist’s red seal. Yamagishi is known for creative Gumma kokeshi distinguished by expressive carved forms, warm wood tones and understated facial features.
