Vintage Mid-Century Mexican Brass & Blue Glass Mosaic Trinket / Cigarette Box

A stunning, authentic vintage Mexican decorative box dating from the mid-20th century. This gorgeous piece heavily captures the iconic mid-century modern aesthetic of Taxco artisan workshops and designers like Salvador Terán.

The lidded box is built on a solid brass chassis encrusted with hand-laid, tessellated lapis-blue glass mosaic tiles. Centered prominently on the lid is a striking embossed brass medallion depicting the traditional Aztec Sun Stone (Calendar). The interior is fully lined with natural cedar wood panels, traditionally used to preserve contents and repel pests.

The underside of the base is cleanly hand-stamped with the country-of-origin hallmark: "HECHO EN MEXICO".

Great vintage condition with a beautiful, authentic handmade character. The exterior blue mosaic tiles are securely set and intact with one tiny defect near the Sun medallion. The brass structure displays an aged golden patina with normal signs of handling. The inside of the brass lid shows typical spot oxidation/darkening from age, and the interior cedar wood lining is clean and firmly in place.
