1973 Signed Mangum Pottery Weaverville NC Master 16oz Mug (1 pint) Autumn Glaze
Offered for your consideration is an extraordinary, investment-grade vintage 1973 hand-thrown studio art pottery master coffee mug / large 1-Pint beer stein. Meticulously hand-crafted on a potter's wheel during the rare, early foundational archive years of the celebrated Mangum Pottery studios (Weaverville / Asheville, North Carolina), this museum-grade regional treasure features a magnificent, highly complex multi-layer glaze-drip technique that has since been completely retired from active gallery production. Showcasing an ultra-luxurious traditional Appalachian craft, rustic cabin farmhouse, or organic Mid-Century Modern lifestyle aesthetic, this 50+ year old piece coordinates flawlessly onto a premier open coffee bar layout or high-end studio ceramics display hutch shelf.
The heavy, exceptionally thick-walled high-fire stoneware body is thrown to a generous 16-ounce master scale from dense, beautifully textured speckled clay. The exterior walls are decorated with a dramatic triple-layer glaze-drip execution—showcasing a deep chocolate-iron brown base that transitions into a frothy oatmeal-cream center belt, capped along the upper rim by a cascading, vibrant Autumn (oxblood red-copper) glaze drip pattern that ran down the shoulders in the kiln. The side is completed by a substantial, hand-pulled ergonomic strap handle integrated with a comfortable upper thumb rest spine. Meticulously hand-signed and dated on the reverse base footprint by the master artisan, this vessel stands as a completely unique, work of historic American folk art.
