#2216 Signed speckled grey stoneware pottery vessel with an expressive applied face.

8” tall No chips or cracks

Studio potters and folk artists across North America and Europe make expressive ceramic face vessels using traditional wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. These whimsical pieces were created in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as decorative art objects rather than functional utility ware. Makers often shape vessels by hand, applying twisted clay for facial features and finishing them with speckled or alkaline glazes.

Collectors and homeowners displayed these distinctive ceramic faces on shelves and tabletops in domestic interiors. They were used purely as decorative ornaments to add character and folk art charm to living spaces. Over time, the production of such expressive pottery shifted from traditional utilitarian potteries to individual studio artists experimenting with sculptural forms.
