#2259 Carstens A vintage West German "Fat Lava" ceramic vase with red and black glaze (Flaw) 7”
There is a flaw in top rim as photographed, it doesn’t show on outer surface. The "Fat Lava" pottery style emerged in West Germany during the 1960s and 1970s, characterized by its thick, often brightly colored glazes with dramatic textures and relief patterns. This style was a departure from earlier, more subdued ceramic designs, embracing a bold, futuristic aesthetic that aligned with the Space Age and pop culture trends of the era. Many West German manufacturers produced these distinctive pieces, which have since become highly sought after by collectors of mid-century modern design.
This particular vase exhibits the typical "Fat Lava" characteristics, with its striking red glaze applied over a dark, textured base, and outlined with black, creating a segmented, almost architectural appearance. The shape, with its bulbous base and tapering neck, is also typical of the period. Such pieces were often designed as decorative items, intended to be statement pieces in contemporary homes, reflecting the era's fascination with bold forms and vibrant colors.
