#4130 Wedgwood Black Jasperware trinket box with classical relief decorations.
No chips or cracks 4” square
Wedgwood Jasperware is a distinctive ceramic developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It is known for its matte finish and the ability to be produced in a wide range of colors, most famously a distinctive blue, but also black, green, and lilac, often decorated with applied white reliefs in classical motifs. The black Jasperware, often referred to as Black Basalt, is particularly prized for its depth and contrast with the white ornamentation.
This particular piece, a trinket box, showcases the neoclassical style that was highly popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, and which Wedgwood masterfully revived. The applied reliefs often depict scenes from mythology, allegorical figures, or floral garlands, reflecting the era's fascination with classical antiquity. Such decorative boxes were used for storing small valuables and were highly sought after as decorative items.
