Blue and white porcelain has a rich history, originating in China during the Tang Dynasty and reaching its zenith during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The cobalt blue pigment, imported from Persia, was applied to white porcelain clay and then fired, creating a durable and aesthetically pleasing ceramic. This style became highly sought after globally, influencing pottery traditions in Japan, Korea, and eventually Europe. Chinoiserie, a French term meaning "in the Chinese taste," refers to the interpretation and imitation of Chinese artistic styles by Western artists and designers. This decorative style became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, adorning furniture, textiles, and ceramics with motifs like pagodas, dragons, and floral patterns. Blue and white porcelain was a significant element in Chinoiserie, often adapted with Western shapes and decorative sensibilities.
