Handcrafted Wooden Hand Carved Mexican Folk Art Depicting Mayan Ball Game
This is a contemporary Mayan Aztec Hand Carving wall art depicting a ceremonial Mayan ball game player. The central figure is surrounded by a stylized ring of Mayan Tzolk'in calendar glyphs. The central figure is featuring an "action shot" of a classic Mesoamerican athlete preparing to strike a ball. He is wearing the knee and hip guards, a loin cloth and an elaborate ceremonial headdress The outer ring - is a multicolored border which contains stylized carvings of Mayan day signs or hieroglyphic calendar blocks. Hand crafted by artisans across regions of Yucatan, Chipas, and Central America. The carving pays tribute to Pok-ta-Pok also known as Pitz, an ancient Mesoamerican game played for over 3000 years across Mexico and Central america. It is more than just a sport- the game serves as a sacred religious ritual . Measures: 11.5 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. This is being sold as pre owned- it was a gift from travel.
