#3054 Handmade Oaxacan black pottery vase with embossed floral designs.
4”x4” no chips or cracks. Oaxacan black pottery, or 'barro negro,' is a distinctive ceramic tradition originating from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Unlike other pottery that is fired to a reddish-brown color, Oaxacan black pottery is burnished and fired in a low-oxygen environment, which gives it its characteristic metallic sheen and deep black color. This technique has been practiced for centuries, with artisans meticulously shaping the clay by hand and then polishing it to a smooth finish before firing. Dona Rosa Real Mateo is a renowned artisan from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, credited with reviving and popularizing the barro negro technique in the mid-20th century. Her work, and that of artisans who followed her methods, is celebrated for its intricate designs, often featuring embossed or incised patterns inspired by pre-Hispanic motifs and nature. These pieces are highly sought after by collectors of Mexican folk art for their unique aesthetic and cultural significance.
