Royal Pottery Zuid Holland "Irene" Hand-Painted Gouda Vase
This is a small, 5" tall by 5.5" wise with handles, hand-painted ceramic vase features a bold, abstract pattern of stylized floralmotifs in a vibrant color palette of yellow, red, black, greens and blue. The form is a classic squat, with a flaring rim and a rounded body. The base is marked with a hand-painted inscription that includes "Royal" and "Zuid Holland," the model number "2846," and the pattern name, "Irene." A green and gold sticker with a crown emblem further authenticates the piece. The piece is a fine example of Gouda pottery, a style of Dutch art ceramics named after the city in Holland where it was produced. The name "Royal Pottery Zuid Holland" and the crown emblem on the sticker indicate that it was made by Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH), a prominent pottery factory that was granted the "Royal" predicate in 1930. The hand-painted marks, including the model number and pattern name ("Irene"), were common practice for Gouda factories, as each piece was individually decorated by an artist. These pieces are highly collectible and reflect the Art Deco and Art Nouveau design movements of the early 20th century.
