Vintage Russian “Snow Maiden” (Snegurochka) Hexagon-Shaped Lacquer Trinket Box Signed 3.75”
Design: Features a hand-painted scene of the "Snow Maiden" (Snegurochka) in a winter landscape with rabbits. Material: Made from papier-mâché, pressed and formed, then finished with multiple layers of lacquer. Origins in Folklore: - The Child of Snow: One popular version tells of an elderly, childless couple who carved a girl out of snow. She miraculously came to life, bringing them joy throughout the winter. - The Daughter of Spring and Winter: In another version, popularized by Alexander Ostrovsky’s 1873 play, she is the daughter of Grandfather Frost and Mother Spring. - The Tragic End: Most folk versions end sadly. She often melts away—either by jumping over a ceremonial midsummer bonfire with other children or by falling in love, which warms her "heart of ice" until she evaporates into a mist.
