Antique Zanesville Glass Blown Glass Bud Vase, mid-1800s, 19 Ribs/Applied Collar
This Zanesville (White) Glass Company bud vase is from the mid-19th century. It is hand-blown, has a rough pontil, and an applied collar of the same light green color as the vase. This came from an antique glass collector's estate; I have also been able to find one identical to this sold with a national Auction company with this Zanesville attribution. The Zanesville Glass Company, also known as the White Glass Company, began production in 1815, ramping up within the next years to produce household goods such as this vase. This aquamarine was one of their main colors. There is light ribbing around the body of the bottle, with a total of 19 ribs. It is cruder than pieces produced in the late 19th century. There are bubbles throughout, an uneven lip (although it is completely polished), small bits of embedded ash, and a slightly uneven orientation. From the White Glass Company/Zanesville Glass Company History - "The company produced high-quality hand-blown glass items characteristic of early 19th-century Midwestern craftsmanship, including window glass, pattern-molded flasks and decanters with swirled ribs (such as 19- or 24-rib designs), sugar bowls, pitchers, tumblers, vases, salts, pans, and other utilitarian and decorative articles. These pieces often featured pontil scars and varied in colors from pale olive yellow and brilliant lime green to deep amber, aquamarine, and occasional blues or amethysts, reflecting the unmechanized artistry of the period before widespread industrial automation." The bud vase is in excellent condition, particularly given its age. There are no chips or cracks. If you purchase more than one item, I am happy to combine shipping to save postage cost.
